HISTORY

The name of the Horseshoe Smokehouse plays a tribute to the Horseshoe bar that occupied our location until the 1970s. The Horseshoe Bar was the epicenter for Jazz and Blues music in Grand Rapids and played host to many great artists in the 40s and 50s.

Our Building

Built 1891 was originally operated as a boarding house and grocery store catering to railroad passengers coming into the city. It operated this way until after World War II when it became the Lamar Hotel.

The Horseshoe Bar Era

Frank Lamar opened the Horseshoe Bar in our location on the first level of the building shortly after opening the hotel. The Horseshoe quickly became a premiere venue for Jazz and Blues music.
